Chairman Numata: Yes, that sounds about right.

Sugawara: Someone introduced me, saying, “There’s a remarkable company you should know about.” The next day I had practice, but I dropped off my business card here in the morning, and you called me later that day. After that, I visited your factory and learned so much about leather. Since then, I’ve been bringing the kids from the Boys League (youth baseball) team I worked with, visiting every year to teach them about true gratitude at its core.

Chairman Numata: The real reason we host factory tours isn’t just to show how leather is made; it’s to help people remember that “this material originally came from a living life.” Baseball teams started coming because coaches realized this perspective helps teach kids to value their gear. It always starts with managers and coaches coming here first and thinking, “I want to share this message with the kids.” Mr. Sugawara, you were certainly one of them.

Sugawara: Absolutely. What struck me most on my very first visit was realizing that even though I had played baseball and thought I understood glove-making, I was completely blind to its true essence. That essence was the realization that behind every glove we use, a life was sacrificed.
